Where does DIY end? Household grid, N-PE, RCCB, legal boundary

8/27/26

What is still plug-and-play

  • Portable power station AC output → extension cord / designated socket.
  • Ground-mounted panel, MC4 → device DC input.
  • Expansion battery, if the manufacturer allows and voltage is correct.
Common trait: no fixed modification to the household grid, no central distribution panel change.

Where the professional starts

  • Fixed wiring instead of socket (backfeed risk).
  • N-PE bonding, mixing household grid earthing.
  • Bypassing or "modifying" RCCB / touch protection.
  • Roof-mounted, grid-tied inverter, 48 V home bank.
"I'll just plug it into the wall" fixed circuit is often legally and safety-wise forbidden — not just a "stronger extension cord".

Legal and local requirements

Country and utility dependent: notification, permit, connection conditions. We do not replace local rules on this site — if grid-tie is the goal, professional + official route.

What you can do instead

  • Measure consumption, reduce peaks with extension-cord use.
  • Plan expansion in phases, not in one jump.
  • Prepare: if a larger system is needed later, different cost and different trade.

Registration gives you access to the compatibility and cable calculators, plus new articles when we update the device database or walk through a new panel type.

Don't stay on the manufacturer's datasheet alone

Registration brings new articles: realistic numbers, cold Voc, panel choice, calculator updates. No affiliate, no "top 10". No spam — only when there's new content.

Important

This article is for information and brainstorming purposes. It is not electrical, engineering, or legal advice, and it does not replace a qualified professional or local regulations.
Portable power station, extension-cord, and "plug and play" solutions have limits. What we describe here is based on our own experience and general technical considerations — your panel, device, cable, and site may differ. A poorly calculated voltage (especially in cold weather) can cause permanent damage without warranty coverage.
Working on electrical equipment can be life-threatening and is often not a DIY job. If you are unsure, or the work goes beyond extension-cord use (fixed wiring, earthing, RCCB, household grid), stop and hire a professional.
The calculations, examples, and calculators shared here are not guarantees of yield, payback, or safety. Implementation, risk, and consequences are yours.
