Series or parallel? The device's voltage window decides

8/27/26

Basic rules

  • Series: Voc and Vmp add up, Imp stays roughly the same — cold Voc is critical.
  • Parallel: Imp adds up, Voc/Vmp follow the worst branch — current limit is critical.
  • Never mix strings of different length or different type on one MPPT branch.
The string operating voltage (Vmp) must stay inside the device window too — not enough if summer Voc "just fits".

When series

Low Voc panel + high max MPPT V: more panels in series, Imp stays low. Example: 3× 36 V Voc ~40 V when cold → ~120 V — only if max MPPT allows (many small units do not).

When parallel

One panel cold Voc near the max, but Imp low: two identical panels in parallel → Imp doubles, Voc does not rise. Check: Imp × branches ≤ max A/port.

String fuse

With three or more parallel branches, string-level protection (e.g. 15–20 A) is often required — for manufacturer cable and MPPT input protection. Two branches often work without a fuse — but read the manual.
Parallel branch = identical panel, identical cable length, identical shade — different string lengths split current wrongly.

Practical example

Device: 12–45 V MPPT, 15 A/port, 2 ports. Panel: Voc 41 V when cold, Imp 10 A, Vmp 33 V.
  • 1 panel series: OK Voc, OK current.
  • 2 panels series: Voc ~82 V → overvoltage → forbidden.
  • 2 panels parallel on 1 port: Voc 41 V, Imp 20 A → 15 A clipping → works, but not ideal.
  • 2 panels parallel on 2 ports (1-1): Imp 10 A/port → ideal if the unit handles two MPPTs separately.

Important

This article is for information and brainstorming purposes. It is not electrical, engineering, or legal advice, and it does not replace a qualified professional or local regulations.
Portable power station, extension-cord, and "plug and play" solutions have limits. What we describe here is based on our own experience and general technical considerations — your panel, device, cable, and site may differ. A poorly calculated voltage (especially in cold weather) can cause permanent damage without warranty coverage.
Working on electrical equipment can be life-threatening and is often not a DIY job. If you are unsure, or the work goes beyond extension-cord use (fixed wiring, earthing, RCCB, household grid), stop and hire a professional.
The calculations, examples, and calculators shared here are not guarantees of yield, payback, or safety. Implementation, risk, and consequences are yours.
