Installation in practice: ground mount, orientation, wind, shade

8/27/26

Ground mount vs roof

For portable power stations, ground mounts have advantages:
  • No roof permit and installer risk.
  • Easier to avoid shade (not next to the gutter).
  • Angle can be fine-tuned season by season.
  • Panel weight does not go on the roof structure.
Downside: theft, children/play area, grass — physical protection and cleaning needed.

Orientation and tilt

Central Europe: south-facing ~30–35° tilt is a common starting point. Flatter angle better in winter, steeper in summer less heat — fine-tuning is site-specific.

Wind load

  • Mount weight + anchoring (ground screw, ballast) — panel is a "flying" surface.
  • Cable securing — do not let it whip in the wind at the MC4.
  • Portable panel: extra attention, often less rigidity.
All-day shade on even 10% of the area costs significant Wh — not "almost good".

Device placement

Power station: dry, cool (if possible), not in direct sun, not in a closed box in heat. DC input close to the panel — short cable = less drop.

Seasonal maintenance

Cleaning (dust, pollen), grass growth check, visual connector inspection — especially in autumn and spring.

Registration brings new articles: realistic numbers, cold Voc, panel choice, calculator updates. No affiliate, no "top 10". No spam — only when there's new content.

Important

This article is for information and brainstorming purposes. It is not electrical, engineering, or legal advice, and it does not replace a qualified professional or local regulations.
Portable power station, extension-cord, and "plug and play" solutions have limits. What we describe here is based on our own experience and general technical considerations — your panel, device, cable, and site may differ. A poorly calculated voltage (especially in cold weather) can cause permanent damage without warranty coverage.
Working on electrical equipment can be life-threatening and is often not a DIY job. If you are unsure, or the work goes beyond extension-cord use (fixed wiring, earthing, RCCB, household grid), stop and hire a professional.
The calculations, examples, and calculators shared here are not guarantees of yield, payback, or safety. Implementation, risk, and consequences are yours.
